The bride and groom charmed onlookers in their wedding finery.
Lavinia and Charley took their vows before a church full of invited guests.
The wedding party climbed onto a platform especially for the wedding. Order was quickly restored, not only by the presence of two dozen uniformed policemen but also by the ringing voice of the Reverend Willey, who began the ceremony. The congregation settled into their seats as the minister offered a prayer for peace and prosperity for Charles and Lavinia.
The brideâs pastor, the Reverend Dr. Putnam, gave Lavinia away in marriage. At that point, according to newspaper reports, the wedding party âknelt in prayer, and the rich sunlight fell through the painted windows upon them.â
Charley and Lavinia repeated their wedding vows confidently and in voices loud enough for all to hear, and then, as the minister pronounced them husband and wife, the newlyweds sealed the vows with a kiss.
As the organ played a recessional, the newlyweds progressed down the long aisle and into a waiting carriage. The New York Times of February 11, 1863, described the scene outside the church:
It is not necessary to mention here of the shouts and yells and screeches with which the junior portion of the throng hailed the happy couple as they entered and left the church. Although it may seem ridiculous, yet it is nevertheless true, that hundreds of persons, including adults, ran after the carriage, not diminishing their speed until the Metropolitan Hotel had been reached.
The streets between the church and the hotel were crowded with gawkers. People hung out of windows, crowded onto the sidewalks, and generally did whatever they could to steal a glimpse of the wedding party. And for a moment, at least, the news of war was forgotten in their enthusiasm and joy at being witnesses to at least a bit of the âfairy wedding.â
